What does true success look like? Is it a prestigious title, a thriving career, or the ability to provide for your family? For Dr. Dalsukh Madia, the answer lies far from his successful American life, back in the small village of Dalkhania
in Saurashtra, where he was born. It’s in the incredible respect he has earned, a respect so deep that his annual visits home are met with a hero’s welcome. His is a story not just of a doctor’s success, but of a life built on a foundation
of service, faith, and a powerful family legacy.

A Journey of Healing
Dr. Madia’s journey began in India, took him to Ireland for surgical training, and finally led him to Marion, Ohio, in 1978. It was here that he chose his vital medical path. He specialized in Anesthesiology, the field where a physician is
responsible for keeping patients safe, comfortable, and completely pain-free during surgery.

Why this particular field? As a fully trained surgeon, Dr. Madia was initially on a different path. But he found the system for advancement in the U.S. frustrating at the time. The decision was sealed through a partnership with his wife,
Dr. Ila Madia. “My wife always wanted to be an anesthesiologist, so she went for anesthesia, and I decided to do [it too],” he shares with a smile. Together, they built a remarkable career, with Dr. Madia achieving a historic milestone in
1982 as the first foreign graduate to become Chief of Staff in the state of Ohio. He later led the 100-physician Smith Clinic as its president for 25 years, a testament to his incredible leadership.

The Courage in His Blood
To understand what drives Dr. Madia, you have to understand his family’s incredible story. His dedication to service is an inheritance. “My grandfather, my uncle, and two aunts, all four of them became Jain sadhus,” he says with pride,
explaining how they built schools and hospitals for the poor in India. But his family history is also marked by tragedy and immense courage. His father, a respected community leader, was killed for defending local Hindus. In the wake of
this devastating loss, his older sister made a choice that would define their family’s legacy. While relatives urged them to move to the safety of Bombay, she refused.

“My older sister, she said, ‘No way I’m going to move from here,'” Dr. Madia shares, his voice filled with admiration. “She stayed there, never got married… she even became stronger than my father.” She took over the family’s affairs,
protected the community, and dedicated her entire life to service, even starting the town’s first high school.

Building a Home for the Community
When Dr. Madia first arrived in Ohio, he noticed something missing. “There was no religious structure,” he recalls. “There was no Hindu temple, forget about Jain temple.” For a man raised with deep spiritual roots, this was a void he knew
he had to help fill. He became a founding trustee for both the Hindu temple and later the Jain temple in Columbus, Ohio, pouring his energy into creating a spiritual home for the growing Indian community. His reputation as a trusted leader
is legendary. He tells an amazing story about a recent fundraiser for a Jain temple in Florida. “They needed two million dollars,” he explains. “And you won’t believe, with my surprise, within three days we raised 2.2 million dollars!” One
phone call to a fellow community member resulted in a stunning pledge. “He said, ‘How about I give one million dollars?'” Dr. Madia remembers. This is the kind of trust and goodwill that is built over a lifetime of service.
